Top Documentary Films of All Time

It’s virtually impossible to have an in-depth discussion about documentary films without Michael Moore coming up. Four of the genre’s top grossing films were produced and directed by Moore. The filmmaker first became recognized in 1989 with his documentary Roger and Me chronicling the downfall of his birthplace in Flint Michigan after the General Motors closed down plants and fired workers. His 1992 film Bowling for Columbine took its title from the notorious massacre at Columbine High School and explored gun violence in America.

With his next production Moore established that he was Hollywood’s top documentary filmmaker. Fahrenheit 911 is the top-grossing documentary of all time grossing more than 222 million worldwide. In this film Moore probes the events surrounding terrorist attack on our nation and heaps criticism on President Busch and his Washington cronies.

Moore followed Fahrenheit with Sicko in 1997 a film exposing the inequities prevalent in the American healthcare system and medical services. Sicko was not as critically acclaimed or financially successful as his prior films but still is ranked fourth of top-grossing documentaries.

Moore doesn’t consider himself a political activist but politics figure heavily into his films. After Sicko Moore produced Captain Mike across America examining patriotism and politics in the nation’s college students followed by Capitalism: A love story, which explores the country’s financial crisis. Can’t get enough?
